    1983-P Washington Quarter Smooth Edge

Hello, I am fairly new to error coins and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why this quarter is like this. The edge is complety smoth, I know that with time sometimes part of the edge can smooth out, But this edge is smooth with what looks to me like there were never any ridges. any information would be awesome thanks

Hi Jdickinson - More than likely the reeding has been taken off deliberately and outside the mint. To be sure, the quarter should have a diameter of 24.3 mm.

You maybe able to check it against another quarter to see if they are the exact same size, however, the best way is by measuring with a caliper.

I knew that could be possible i had seen a post earlier that clearly had the edge kind of cut off. But this coin is just about identicial in size and width of a normal 1983 washington quarter. Everything else on both sides look normal. If it was done deliberately what would be some ways that it was done. i'm just not sure how it would be done. I mean it is smooth and about the same all the way around. thanks

The reeding was obliterated outside the Mint. Most likely the coin was rolled and simultaneously squeezed in a mechanical device. The edge, which appears convex in vertical cross-section, is consistent with this scenario.
