  • 1998-D Speared? Lincoln Memorial

When I'm out of IKES, I scour the house for loose change to search for errors--tonights coin is this 1998-D penny, with 4 naked-eye visable "spears" into and out of the Lincoln Memorial, Northeast to Southwest--they look like the sunrays on a Peace dollar, shape-wise. Curious what these might be from?
    Thanks

Hi ilikeikes - These lines are called die scrapes and since they are generally orientated from northwest to southeast they are believe to be caused from the ejection fingers. They are fairly common on the cent and I have seen them on the quarter (see CPG 4th Edition, Vol II. pg 219).

These lines fall into the same category as die cracks, gouges, chips and cuds.
