It appears to be a fake. There is no metal flow in the design elements bordering the edge. Also the outer margin of the reverse face shows a downward slope (downwarping), indicating that this half dollar was trimmed with a hollow punch or similar device. There's another undersized half dollar somewhere on eBay that appears to be the result of the same sort of mischief.

I was tempted to call an alert on this one.

It is an awful shame to be ripped off like this. All it takes is something like this to erode any kind of faith in the hobby.

Yet, like many, I just turn my head, but what can anyone do?

Just get educated, which is the most meaningful, and remarkable defense against this kind of crap.

That one looks real. I see conspicuous metal flow in the letters adjacent to the coin's edge on the reverse.
