    No FG on reverse

I have ran across a 1970 Denver minted Lincoln Memorial Cent in some pocket change. All though it looked normal at first glance and is not a key date coin, I put it under the microscope, as I do all of my coins and realized that like the 69 D LMC, there is no FG on the reverse. I have exhausted all of my resources trying to find some information on it to no avail. Can someone please help me with this and maybe teach me how to find information on such coins in the future? Thanks in advance guys. Hope all is well and your new year is going well thus far.

there are a good amount of no fg lmc in the 60s/70s. it is just an abraded and/or worn dies. they coincide with floating roofs and other abraded features on the obv/rev.

they can come with some dramatic die polishing lines if the condition of the coin is high enough to see them.

there should be plenty of listings/sales results that you can figure out which are worth setting aside and which are nice to put into perhaps a date-run set of them?

be aware of partial or phantom/silhouette FG which are really nothing much of anything tbh. so rotate the coins fully to scour the area for partial letters.

Years ago I bought a 5000 count 1969 D bag of mint state Lincolns. As I went through the bag, i was finding a good amount of floating roof/no FG coins. In the ending had over 10 rolls of suspects and 2 rolls of very good candidates.

When I researched this, my interpretation was that if there was any hint of the designers initials present, even a slight hill, I would put them in a roll and marked them suspect. If the high intensity lighting and magnification on the microscope could not detect any portion of the FG, it was put in the very good candidate rolls.

I then put the rolls in storage and have not initiated any further movement on these. I imagine there are thousands of these available from different years.

You can search this forum for older posts of No FG. It may provide more references. Should I find the ones on PCGS or NGC, I will provide a link. I know there are several other forums which have topics on this subject.

As occnumis2021 stated, these are issues with the die maintenance. PCGS and/or NGC had articles on them. Additionally, the Cherry Pickers Guide had a listing for the Floating Roof/ no FG, and most veteran collectors were mildly upset at the listing and prices listed. Although the cherry pickers guide has them listed, as a veteran collector, I find it hard to believe many sell since they are so common.

Things that have been abraded were either scratched off the coin or, it simply filled with debris. Some of the FG gained popularity with some of the collectors such as the Kennedy half dollar. The designer initials on the Kennedy are larger than the one on the cent, so that's why the interest is slightly better.

As far as offering resources for future finds, it depends on the coin and the possible issue. I suggest bookmarking the following websites at a minimum:

            For varieties
Https://conecaonline.info (CONECA master list of varieties)

Die varieties such as doubled dies, Repunched mint marks (RPMs), Over Mint Marks (OMMs), Repunched Dates, Overdates, coin design varieties, as well as regular coins and error coins.

Https://coppercoins.com (look to top left for variety search link)
https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/listings (Doubled die listings for Nickels)

            For error coins
            https://www.error-ref.com/index-of-entries/

In this forum, at the bottom of the main page where all types of forums listed here will show a forum called " Numismatic links". It should have a decent listing of some resources for those that need one.

            Happy hunting.
