1954 Dime with either PMD or possible gear strikethrough?
Hello, I'm a paid member - I came across this lovely little dime. It's hard to see it without zooming in, but once I did, it looked like a gear had gotten struck into the planchet. If it is PMD, I'd be curious as to what it was! Any thoughts? You do not have permission to view this gallery.

In my opinion, it might be difficult to say with certainty what actually happened to this coin and when. Once a coin hits circulation, it is open to a wide variety of intentional and unintentional abuse. This could very well be post mint damage.
Now, if this coin was mint state brand new, a person might consider this as some sort of reeded edge strike struck into the face of Roosevelt. But, again its difficult to assess this due to the width of the area of concern.
The area of concern has the same average patina as the rest of the coin, so it probably was not done recently.
If it was an uncirculated coin, it would have had more clout of being a strike through a strip of reeding. Some one may have caught this early and plucked it out of circulation or a roll before it went into circulation.
It is always best to show the obverse and reverse if possible. It gives people the opportunity to look for additional clues of what might have happened, and rule out some possibilities.
