New, Uncirculated Stacey Park Milbern Quarter with a guage - maybe? From a member
filedata/fetch?id=125485&d=1774993438&type=thumb Nothing urgent, I just don't understand this one. This is from a roll in a box of quarters from my bank. The box is marked "DO NOT RETURN TO CASH VAULT". All brand new quarters for commercial circulation, they are all beautiful - I love when they are shiny. But this one coin has a mark on Stacey's face. I thought it may be a die break at first - there is one on the obverse, small. Typical minor scratches expected of new coins. But this gauge has to be damage, but has none of the typical trademark damage signs - no rims on the sides to show tearing at all. What could cause this? How can it be PMD if the roll is OGP from the mint, and what would cause the guage - and if its a die break, why wouldn't it fill?

In my opinion, the magnification is quite high. It make very minor things look amazing. But i believe its pretty minor.
This could have been an issue with the planchet (blank) itself. Under the stress of the strike, the planchet flaw was exposed under very high pressure during the strike. To me it looks like a ravine, a hole vice a raised, jagged line on the face.
If it is a die crack or die gouge, they would be raised on the coin since the working die squeezes the planchet and metal fills in most voids on the die. What is sunk into the die is raised on the coin when the planchet is sqeezed by the working dies.
