1944-S Lincoln cent with reverse deformity

This was another Lincoln cent, from 1944, that got my curiosity.

While the obverse shows no damage, except circulation wear, the reverse has a peculiar indent that traces itself across the reverse die. At first, I thought that it may be a strike through, perhaps a piece of wire or something similar. However, if it were a strike through, neither E (of ONE or CENT) would show a continuation under the deformity. Thus, a strike on a damaged planchet would seem to be the answer for this coin.
