1948 S Quarter Rim Problems - Extra Thick
Hello. Thanks for having me here. I just picked up this coin at a estate sale today and noticed rim problems and its much thicker than a normal size quarter. My scales just broke yesterday so I cant get the weight from it. As you can see in the pictures, on the obverse side, around the inside rim it looks like grooves around it then it comes up to a very sharp edge. On the reverse there is hardly a ridge at all. It looks to be much thicker and smaller than a regular size quarter. Would this be a mint error? ThanksLast edited by Gene'sCoins; 06-06-2009, 09:20 PM.Tags: None

I believe that this is post mint damage. Some servicemen, to pass time away, would fashion silver coins into rings by tapping the rim with a spoon or small hammer. Once the desired size was acheived for their wife or girlfriend, the inside was hallowed out and then smoothed.
The picture that you show looks like the begining of such and endeavor.
