CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Don't know how to label this 1977D Nickel it's a mess

    It's a mystery to me. And all I can add is the only way I was able to see this was with a microscope The coin otherwise looks normal. No lumps no bumps nothing unusual.

    It more than likely can be listed as post mint damage... something done after it left the mint. I am not too sure what happened there. It could have been mounted on something, or used as a shim. Once coins get released in circulation, the amount of abuse is limited only by the amount of effort used by the creator.
