My concern for this is that the large letter looks like a "U", which is a possibility. Then there is a "13" as well. Could that be a partially filled " 18"? Maybe.
The oddity is that the "U" appears to be forward facing or a normal looking letter, where as the potential partial date appears to be in reverse.
Could these "dropped letters" landed differently on the collar? Maybe.
In my opinion, it just seems really odd that die chips and debris will actually fall out with letters or numbers somewhat or fully intact, hit the die and not shatter. Could this type of error occur? ABSOLUTELY. His assessment on value seems a bit high, as I personally know my clients would not pay a premium for this type of error even authenticated and slabbed.
The overabundance of edge lettering issues may have squashed the value and interest in these type issues. People are soooo over edge lettering. I do not even stock them...
Not sure what to think of this. You might want to go to the CONECA examinations forum and start a post. Include all this information here and more if it is relevant.
I have had better success with initial post in the examination area that have almost too much info, because in my experience, additional replies may not be seen, or may take some time for the examiners to circle around to posts that need replies.Last edited by MintErrors; 07-15-2022, 11:32 AM.

2009 P John Tyler Presidential Dollar
Good morning. I've come across this dollar coin that appears have a strike through error on the edge of the coin, of the dropped letter (in this case numbers) type. After searching for information on edge lettering errors, I ran across Ken Potter's article in Numismatic News,
https://www.numismaticnews.net/archi...ppears-on-edge
and I believe this may be an example of this error type. Also, and I could be full of beans, but it appears there may have been devices already on the edge of the coin when it was struck with the correct collar. I would appreciate any opinions on this coin.Attached Files- WIN_20220630_17_24_27_Pro.jpg (63.3 KB, 41 views)
