Lincoln Cents 1952 D, Date Error.

It is very difficult to assess a coin which is heavily circulated. I see what you are talking about, but the number is still there. It's not a doubled die nor a repunched date. Could it have been damaged in circulation and the signs of thar damage worn off ? It is very difficult to tell.

There were over 746 million cents minted in 1952 at Denver. This means, they made at least 750 working dies to create all of those cents. They probably made a lot more working dies, since they know some would fail earlier than the 1 million cents per working die they typically get.

I personally do not see why this coin would be an error, again, the number is there. It might be a little higher and not as long as the other numbers but, I think it was deemed by the mint as an acceptable die, and they produced those working dies which made coins.

Usacoinbook.com has an example that is close to what you have. Even with no wear, the number 1 on the date seems short too....

It might have been a partially filled number with debris, but with the wear, its difficult to know for sure.
