CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • couple of quarter errors

I moved this to the mint error forum but don't know how to delete it from this one.

I got this 1978D quarter in change years ago. Looks like a planchet problem but others, after looking at pics on NGC forum disagree. Others on that forum aren't so sure. Nor am I. Pics show obverse and reverse and an edge comparison to a regular quarter. It does have reeding all the way around but taking this pic is the first time I notice the diameter is a hair shy of the regular quarter. The other is (I feel sure) a legitimate cracked planchet, also from circulation. I got the same year as the date on the coin so I graded it BU on the holder but I wouldn't argue about if someone disagreed.

I have not weighed it yet, but it's obviously thinner than the regular quarter. I have ordered the appropriate scale to weigh it and it should be delivered soon. I will weigh it and post the weight then.

Any and all input is welcome.

As far as deleting a post in a thread, you might be able to EDIT the post and there might be an option for deleting it.

My concern about the missing clad layer is this. In my opinion, if a missing clad layer coin is genuine, typically it is the exact same size of a quarter and it's not reduced in thickness, unless it is an underweight planchet as well. If there was an issue with weight, when the coin was struck, the planchet would probably not fill the collar all of the way to make the reeding show all the way around the coin.

When I look at this coin, I see the mainly the lowest areas on the coin you can see what appears to be copper. The higher areas appear to have some cladding. It looks questionable/suspect to me. Again, I am one opinion, and it is best to wait for others to chime in.

OR.....You can add a post in the coneca services forum, under examinations to get a CONECA staff member to offer his opinion. I highly suggest adding good clear photos and as much detail in text of what you are seeing.

Your photos get the point across, but, there is more background than coin showing. A photo app of some sort should allow you to crop an image. The icon usually looks like a bent square. It allows you to draw a box around the coin, and discard the background.

thanks for that. I probably haven't taken over 100 pictures of anything since I had a cell phone, and including these 3, maybe 10 of coins. And all of those lately. the cropping instruction helps.
