Hi everyone, my name is Jen. I am relatively new to coin collecting. I work at a casino in the vault. This casino runs change for people at no cost, so we get a lot of coin coming thru. Well as you can imagine, some of the coin that comes through is pretty nasty, and we use it in our ATMs. So I started going through it picking out the nasties, lol, and while doing so, developed a love for coins. Not really knowing what I was doing, I started also pulling out and brand new looking (older coin), and any with toning (thinking that they were probably part of someone’s albums at one time). This has been going on for the last 2 years or so and I have A LOT of coins now, lol. Sadly, I was told yesterday that I couldn’t do it anymore, because “I was doing it for personal reasons”. The real reason though, is that the employees were annoyed at having to do their job. Anyway, I said that was fine and I gave my notice. It actually felt really good doing so. Anyway, now I have massive amounts of coin, a lot that I believe is valuable, but I am just not really sure of myself in the coin department. Anyway, that is my story, at least so far. I’m really glad to be here, because yesterday is definitely not the end of the coin world for me. It’s just the beginning.

Welcome aboard

It really depends on the year of the coins.

1964 and prior, most dimes, quarters and half dollars were 90% silver
1965 thru 1970, the half dollars only were 40% silver

As for nasty, I do not know if you mean pretty beat up and ugly. The problem with circulated coins is one it gets into circulation, its open season and people do weird things to coins after it has left the mint. This is typically known as PMD or, post mint damage - done by some one whether intentionally or by accident.

Prior to 2003, the US mint had mint errors escaping the mint. From 2003 to now, the mint errors escaping the Mint are slim to none. Some of the mint errors and varieties can be found. Hopefully you have some of them.
