CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    New Member introduction

Hi, I'm Cole and I've quickly grown to love cherrypicking varieties after purchasing the cherrypicker's guide back in December. I've been a member of CONECA for a couple of months, but want to start being more active on the forum! I'm primarily interested in modern varieties (1965-present) and have been focusing on building a full set of all varieties of Kennedy halves and Eisenhower dollars recognized by NGC. I also find the niche of varieties with errors quite fun, and am trying to collect as many of these as possible (the 1971 S 50c I attached from NGC is my current favorite cherry-pick I've made). I'm currently trying to learn more about the different types of doubled dies and how they're made, as well as all the different types of errors and how to distinguish them from post-mint damage. Thanks!

    Welcome aboard.

There are errors, then there are varieties. I have a few posts in my signature block that might help, especially the one about posting in the forum areas... it helps break down tne types of errors and types of varieties.

As far as errors and distinguishing them from post mint damage, it comes with time and experience. A good book that describes the minting process would help. More often than not, circulated coins are subject to all sorts of abuse. Major mint errors typically will not fit into a roll, so they are getting a bit scarce, unless you know a good source.

    Happy hunting
