I hope this helps. Machine doubling is flat. It's a second strike, think of it as vibration. A genuine double die occurs when the image is doubled on the hub then struck onto the planchet. When the engraver goes over the image to make it crisp a second or double image is on the hub. This appears as full rounded just like the original image it is not flattened. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference. Example, the famous 1969 S DDO penny. There's no doubling on the mint mark. If there's doubling on the letters& date great.....if the S is doubled it's not. There's a great reference book called Strike it Rich by Ken Potter & Dr.Brian Allen. Great illustration for beginners. I hope I explained Dad's well enough. I tried to not be academic by using book quotes, sometimes that's confusing...best of luck.....CJ
