CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • New collector. Need advice

I'm in my late 50s. Always on YouTube in evenings. Got interested in coins and very curious. I came across a weird 1989 quarter. Looked all over videos and websites. I studied it from all angles. Only thing I observed was it's slightly smaller than other quarters. Just weird looking both sides 16651829988384414803788419698493.jpg

In my opinion, this is post mint damage. It looks like the original strike of the coin when it was minted many moons ago was done right. The issue here is the coin appears "puffy" in the photos. This usually means the coin may have been exposed to high heat, whether in a dryer or on top a water heater, or other high heat scenario. The heated metals in a coin can produce trapped gases which can warp coins.

About the size, it may have been in a dryer, simply doing circles, and occasionally dropping down the drum. That falling distance may be enough to give it a small hammer effect, and slightly reducing the size. The rim on some dryer coins can be quite dramatic.
