1917 Indian head nickel

Hello all, i'm new to the forum, i've been saving coins for a while and am interested to find out about them. I found a 1917 Indian head nickel in my yard; the detail is very good but it is covered with a red crust and dirt, should i have it cleaned? Thanx. madmac

Cleaning coins will reduce the value. You might try soaking it in water for a bit, maybe a few hours at least then place on a towel paper. I would not rub the coin, pat dry or turn it over a few times on a paper towel and air dry.

At this point, the coin was probably in the ground for quite some time. Not a good coin to send it to get slabbed because it would come back as a details grade and tagged as environmental damage. So, the choice is up to you. People may suggest soaking it in some acetone to see how much gunk it can be removed.
