  • Merely a Minnow in a Ocean of Coin Sharks

Hello to all my fellow coin collectors, I'm Kase. While growing up my father had a large fold out map of the US that held each state's respective quarter. Being maybe 13 by the time we finished the map I never really appreciated what I was looking at. Fast forward to my 26th birthday and I'm sitting in my childhood home when I get the urge to dig through the change jar that's sat beside the front door for as long as I could remember. I had only recently found channels on Youtube "coin roll hunting" and the prospect of silver being in the rolls hooked me. With that being said I'd been looking at coins and "starting a collection" for maybe 2 months at the most. I grab the small glass mason jar full of change and my girlfriend and I get to searching, when from the depths of this jar I pull out an 1851-O seated dime. I was blown away instantly. My family of 5 have pulled change from this jar for YEARS and on my birthday I find a coin that's 171 years old. Poor old dime is rough to say the least but the O is clearly there. I didn't know till I returned home that it was THE key date of seated dimes quadrupling my excitement levels instantaneously. To say I've dove in head first since then is an understatement. My strategy is heavily influenced by a dismal cash inflow, buying a little bit each week as I can. While it can be wildly discouraging seeing these big wigs drop thousands of dollars of a single coin knowing I'm a longgg way from that. If the excitement I feel from a $25 peace dollar only multiplies with those major purchases like the big wigs make, I'm more excited for this hobby than I ever expected.

I haven't found anything incredible yet but I will continue happily throwing myself behind the screen of my coin microscope for hours any given weekend! Always trying to convince myself "that's got to be doubling right?". Hope you had a great Easter weekend Mr. James.

a neat find and gratz. welcome to numismatics.

the 51-o is not THE key to the seated dime series. only in higher grades does the premium really start to take off, say XF and above.

that said, not too many people out there wouldn't like to pull one out of a change jar so many others have pulled coins from only for it to be left behind!

i personally enjoy coins at .25c each and 5, 6 and 7 figures. so do i enjoy seeing those that put together albums of circ coinage as much as unc. whatever you do, have fun and LEARN.
