CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    New member

    Good morning,
My name is Robin and I am rather new to all of this. I am trying to learn all about coins and paper money as well as get to know others on the same topics. I remember my father always looking at his pocket change and money and although he didn't know alot, I now realize why he would point some things out. I also used to collect old jewelry (costume and real) but the faux items now make it more difficult to do so.
I am also a paid member, thanks and have a great day!

      Welcome aboard.

We hope we can answer most of your coin questions. There are a decent amount of seasoned collectors and dealers in this forum, willing to offer their opinions.

      A few tips:
      • One coin per thread/post. Don't post your coin in another's post, make a new one, even if they are the same, and you would like an answer.
      • Photos need to be less than 2mb each. You can upload 8 photos per initial post. You can reply to your own post if you need to add more photos.
      • A full photo of the obverse and reverse of the coin helps people determine overall what's going on
      • Close up of the affected area is good, but we need to zoom in and look for items that will help assess the issue.
      • We prefer good crisp focused photos over blurry ones. The better the photo, the better chance at receiving a good answer.
      • Too much lighting causes glare and renders the photo useless. A good balance of light makes a big difference. Lighting in my opinion is one of the hardest things to master, as it changes just about on every coin.
      • Cropping coins is vital. Photos of coins that show 80% background and 20% coin do us no good. There are plenty of photograph editing programs out there that offer cropping. The symbol looks like a bent square. Usually all you have to do is draw a box around the photo of the area you want to keep and crop it.
      • Photos around 800 pixels by 800 pixels is just at the edge of full size width of the forum. But it allows people to see photos well, if the photos are focused.
      • Uploading photos here... there is a camera icon to the top left of the text box which toggles the upload photos buttons at the bottom left of the text box.

        Hi Gary,
I read your articles earlier today and they are very helpful and enlightening. Where do I go to submit a coin pic when I need to ask a question about it? Do I do so in this same posting or should it be done under another formum title?
I purchased several new quarter rolls from the bank and they are of the 2023P Edith P Kanaka'ole quarter so far. I seem to see somewhat a recurring pattern in the quarters and am curoius about what I am seeing. Thanks for your advice

          Thanks for the praise.

Its best to start a new topic and name it by the coin date and type, maybe a brief description, like:

          1990 Quarter strike through ?

For the CONECA website, I recommend determine whether it is an error or a variety. If it is classified as a doubled die, re-punched mint mark, over mint mark, overdate misplaced mint mark, misplaced date, or repunched date or anything similar, it's a variety.

Everything else ( just about) might be classified as an error.

Here you have several options. I recommend going to the main forum page, and posting in either the errors or varieties forum. If you consider the coin too generic or different you can post it in the General form.

All the above areas are public, and people can provide opions based on what they see.

The other option is to have CONECA staff look over the coin. Most of the posts are private, which means only CONECA staff members can reply and see your post. In order to let CONECA staff see the coin:

Go to the top left of this page and click on forums tab.
Scroll down find the CONECA SERVICES area.
If your coin is an error, add a post under the EXAMINATIONS forum.
If your coin is a variety, add a post under the ATRRIBUTIONS forum.

CONECA staff are volunteers and it may take a bit to get a reply. I highly suggest that you add as much text and good clear photos as you can in the first post. It may take them a while before they circle around once again.

Hello, by way of introduction, I am Thomas Valli, in my late 50's, currently located in western PA. Collecting of coins has been a part time hobby on and off through the years. Coin collecting started when I bought my very own metal detector when I was 12 years old. Saved and saved and paid with my own money. Parents thought I was crazy. So long story - short, I have accumulated hundreds of coins and dug up thousands of coins over the years. For the the first time, I started looking at my coins more closely. Even bought a cheap microscope as my eyes are not as sharp as they used to be. I have been fascinated by the various errors observed in some of my coins. I am now a proud paying member of CONECA who has joined to seeking and learn more and share a few of my findings to those who may be interested.
