Not sure if my post went thru sorry. Strong doubling on all letters especially the ERC in America, which has separation to the letters. The memorial is doubled as well. Pillars and steps and also the top of memorial especially the right side. And a little bit of doubling on the bottom left of the steps.

In my opinion, this seems like it is split plating damage. This occurs when the planchet is struck into a coin. The pressure was too intense and it damaged the top copper plating. Below that copper plating is the zinc core.

That staining on the coin, especially if it is dark colored or blue is probably zinc that has leaked from the zinc core.

I did look at variety vista to see if there were any DDRs for that year. Here is the link:

      Happy hunting.

So for this coin's doubling class being I and IV - is there very many examples of that type elsewhere. Would this be considered a good variety?

            Morning Ant1981,
I believe the coin has a lot of debris on the REV. What I can pull from your photo looks more like plating issues like Gary has said. I do NOT see anything that positively looks like a double die reverse.
Sorry. Eric Coneca image - 1991D.jpg Coneca image - 1991D.jpg

No worries Sir thank you for pointing that out to me. Yes I do see how that issue could cause some the effects I've mentioned. I for one would not want to try and convince someone that I am a pro at this. But I am trying to get better at the terminology and accuracy, (on a factual not emotional), stand point. Just one more question tho that I have and I know I will always regret it if I didn't know for sure, but the die marks that were identified in wexlers listings for this variety, does that help with identification or is it still a coin by coin basis. Because they have the same markings such as the dot on the lower right leg of the R in America?

Die varieties such as doubled dies, Repunched mint marks (RPMs), Over Mint Marks (OMMs), Repunched Dates, Overdates, coin design varieties, as well as regular coins and error coins.

Is the link to see the page on wexlers listings

Hello Ant1981. The link you provided above takes me to all the Wexler listings for 1981. When you reference a coin you need to add which variety you are comparing to I.E. Wexler DDR-001 etc. We have no idea, and there are multilple double die reverses for this date.

Most of the double die listings there, ""Wexler's Website"" are all multiple column double dies. There are no photo's of the columns on your photo's, so I then question where you believe the double die is? From what I see, "A guess" you believe the double die is between United States of America and the rim. This would help if you place arrows to where you believe the DDR is for reference.

Markers are only good for a reference if you have all the PUP's Pick Up Points of the double die you believe it is also on the planchet/coin, You need most of those points before you try to use markers, so we can reference if the coin is actually a double die.

                    I hope this helps you.
                    Eric
