In my opinion, this all looks like die deterioration damage.
The affected letters are lower and flat.
These dies eventually wear out, become clogged or both.
One thing to take into account is that the working dies that struck this coin usually strike up to 1 million coins before being retired. That means in the last 60 years, IF this was a multiple variety, I am pretty sure it would have been spotted a long time ago.
If damage is lower and shelf or step like, its probably in the worthless damage category.
For those reasons, that is why the coin received an MS64 from PCGS. Take a close look at the face and overall bust of Lincoln, its lacking a lot of fine details, especially on the hair.Last edited by MintErrors; 05-05-2024, 09:47 AM.Gary Kozera
