In my opinion it's probably is not. These dime were extremely well circulated and most can be found in Almost good to good condition. Your coin is probably just worn and flattened down D, due to circulation.
Needless to say but, the 1916-D can go for some decent pocket change...where did you get this ?
Varietyvista only lists one RPM for that year/mintmark, and this does not appear to be it:

have you had a chance to check on wexler's coins and varieties , he actually has two listed with split serif and one of them has the mint mark on the same location , I saw the one in Variety Vista and saw that it wasn't it . I can see the flattening from circulation but I can also see the split on the serif that still shows on my just like the one in wrpm-002 in Wexler's . It there a reason you didn't mention wexler's .

In my opinion, nothing at all wrong with John Wexlers site. I will say some of John's listing were not on the same tier of Coneca, and some were considered too minor. It's a long debate for people willing to spend many days discussing it.
Split serifs on a highly circulated coin can be tough to prove. But......an overlay might do it. See below.
Every working die had the mint mark hammered in by hand. This means each working die very well may have unique placement of the mintmark on each die.
The position of the mintmark is crucial to see if you have an exact match. The best way to handle this is to create an overlay.
The problem lies in the photographs on doubleddie.com
They are at an angle that not at 90 degrees. So you can't just flip them and have a good photo for an overlay. Unless the coin owner can duplicate the exact same photo to include size, it becomes a pain to make an overlay.
Maybe some one with more time can consider doing anoverlay to see if lines up.Gary Kozera

The first thing I would say is yes it looks like a split serif RPM. The problem with listing something like this is: 1) not enouph detail
2) Circulation damage - there are what looks like 2 hits to the mintmark so an exact overlay would be touph just because of wear. 3) As Gary has mentioned, Wexler did not provide photo's that are easy to overlay. The orientation of the mintmark is not 90 degree's. 4) Honestly the coin provided would not include for sure die markers. That would be the killer for a coin in this condition.
I spent some time and fixed your photo to show how the orientation would need to be to overlay.
I hope this helps

That's cool man, It does look like a minor split serif RPM. If you wouldn't have posted the second photo showing the upper serif, I probably personally would not have commented. Wear affects everything and can also affect the photograph taken. Very good idea to take multiple photo's as close as possible.
FYI.. Wexler's photo's are copyrighted so we cannot copy/past a photo from the website. You could e-mail Dan Driffin if you would like to overlay the photo.Last edited by eaxtellcoin; 06-10-2024, 09:53 PM.
