1989-D 1C Machine doubling, and possible date/mint?
This kind has me baffled it I see obvious machine doubling, but I also see possible actual doubling under the eight especially. Possibly under the D but dirt and debris occlude my view. What do you do in those circumstances? I appreciate you Taking a look 2024_0702_173330_367.jpegTags: None

Hello Conan62,
Happy 4th!
What I see on the mintmark is just debris. I don't see an RPM. What you are seeing on the 89 of the date is refered to as Die Fatigue Doubling. The die gets hot striking planchets and as it hits the softer zinc planchets it moves the material away from the center. You can see this in your 5th photo. It looks like a wave of metal is flowing away from the center of the planchet. It's another form of worthless doubling.
I hope this helps.
Eric
