CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    1938 S DDR-001 MS/BU Lincoln cent (EDS), Very Early Stage A
I recently acquired a pair of the above variety as confirmed by MM placement and die crack under the center of the bust.
    For easier comparison, here's the:
    VV listing- 1938-S DDR-001 (varietyvista.com)
    C C listing- 1938S 1DR-001
    D D listing- Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties (doubleddie.com)

VV & CC have it listed as a Class 6. DD as a Class 6 + Class 2 on the wheat tips. My examples show separation on both wheat tips and the outside band of the wheat ears. The Class 2 is stronger on the left wheat.

VV images don't seem to show any separation on the wheat tips but CC does, yet both sites are saying this is only Class 6.

I guess my question is whether the examples attributed by VV and CC just didn't show the Class 2 separation or if there might have been another reason.

      Thank you.

I did hear from an attributor on another forum who confirmed my thought on why this didn't get a class 2 designation as well.
For class 2 designation, "Normally, the separation you would see on these is on the motto, and the wheat lines when strong enough."

I don't see any separation on the motto (EPU), but the separation on the wheat lines does look like normal, class 2 doubling (as shown in images for other class 2 varieties). Not just the wheat tips show the separation, but the wheat lines as well (and not just the outside ones). Of course, like always, it's easier to see the separation on the lines with the coin in hand.

Thanks to everyone who has looked and enjoyed this coin.
