CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • DDR or MD?

Would you review the photos and see if the 1961 Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar Proof Coin reverse is doubled die or just machine doubling? Thanks!

    Hello,
    N-7290

In my opinion, this is mechanical damage (aka mechanical Doubling, ejection doubling, worthless doubling). It's much more lower than the other impression. The letters are not thicker nor is there any letters thicker and they do not have any split serifs. In addition, if the variety requires more than 10x multiplication, and IF it was a DDR, then it might have been labeled as too minor to list.

Also, proofs are typically struck more than once to give that bold and complete looking strike so it appeals to collectors. Sometimes the coins can move ever so slightly resulting in what you see on your coin.

Two sites to see a good 1961 Franklin DDR are:

    Happy hunting.

I'm moving the post to the Die Variety Forum. Questions about Double Dies and RPM's belong there.
        Happy Holidays!
