CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1948-S 5C RPM ???

Is this a RPM or a example of punch bounce in MDS? There's not a listing in VV but that "S" looks inverted with that 81' type 2 ball sherif style MM especially in the middle of the "S" (probably me).
It's in to good of condition to just toss back into the pond though especially coming from pocket change to bad all wasn't this way huh......

You could almost say "Some dollar$ makes no €ent$"

In my opinion, it looks like the very center of the mi tmark might have been damaged as the coin separated from the working dies.

All of the design features are incused into the working dies for this era of coin so, even that small "S" is subject to damage when it was being ejected. The middle part of that S looks a bit thinner.

I know of the 1941S inverted mintmark. I do not collect many Jeffersonnickels, so I don't know all of the varieties. I do know select years of the early Jefferson nickels have over mint marks and an inverted mint mark as well. From all my years in the hobby, I believe the Jefferson nickel and Roosevelt dime have limited collector interest in this area.

If conecaonline.info or varietyvista.com don't have it listed, then it's probably something else. Brian's variety nickel site has a ton of nickel resources both in his listing and for sale areas.

Variety vista does list two mintmarks used in 1948 at the San Francisco mint.

      http://varietyvista.com/25%20What%20...k%20Styles.htm

      They were MMS-004 or MMS-007.

The link above is an outstanding reference tool.
