I see what occnumis2021 is saying. When I am looking at the corner of the building below the S mintmark, I think I see a marker coming off that corner heading north east on the varietyvista photos. It seems to be there on stage A and stage B photos. I don't see it on the OPs coin. The OPs coin and the one on varietyvista look similar. See if you can check that potential marker, and see if there are any scratches that look similar to those on varietyvista. I DO use a tablet and I can zoom in pretty good.
To the OP....I would suggest checking Brian's varieties to see if he has any listings with markers/ pickup points. If I can find the time today to do an overlay, I will. The next 2 to 5 days I am quite busy and will likely have more pressing matters to attend to. My time here may be very limited.Gary Kozera

Wexler's referenced die scratches between the "U" in Unum that my coin does not have. Thanks for the advice and instructions on how to proceed. This coin had a good match to the VV pictures and also had a good mint mark location with regard to the Monticello building and rim of the coin. I see the difference in the slant on the bottom edge of this coins mint mark and the VV example. I'm posting both here for anyone who is interested in the comparison. While something seems to be going on with this coins mint mark the coin is not in that great of condition and is not likely worthy of additional discussion.

it looks like strike doubling from the image(s) provided which can to the untrained eye (and sometimes even trained eyes) appear to be quite similar to known rpm/ddr/ddo etc. these are the waters though.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

Evening Ron,
First look at placement of RPM#001. Notice from What Dr. Wiles gave us the end of Monticello's step it directly below the curve of the "S", your coin has the steps about half way Left or farther West. I cannot tell for sure if that lower line is raised. But I think if you do an overlay you will find the placement are different. I would like to see the West side of the mintmark photographed with more light. I have a feeling you will find that what is missing of the primary mintmark is what you see West.

To compare the position of the mint mark to the Monticello steps I'm pasting the VV photo and subject coin photos side by side for educational purposes. They look close to me so what I'm learning from the exercise is that I need to up my game and teach myself how to do an overlay. Thanks for pushing me to unfamiliar territory. I'll search for videos or instruction and post a question in the general forum if I come up empty. 1939 s VV mm pos.png 1939 S rpm1.png

One of the best scenarios is to have both photos at the same size and with the photos target area (in this case the mint mark) and some part of the devices present like other letters, parts of the building or other features. This will allow the overlay to be created more accurately.
One may have to get creative on getting the two files close to the same size so they can be used as in an overlay. Size meaning in relation to the mintmark and background devices.
I can attempt to help with some info. It's all from memory so bear with me. It's also been a sleep deprived week.
I download paint.net for PC from the authors website. I dont have the link handy right now due to being on the tablet vice PC.- Once the software is installed and paint.net is open, you can go to the LAYERS menu.
- You can use the open file on the layers menu.
- Once that is complete a single photo should be visible.
- Open a second file doing it the same process.
- Within the layers menu at the bottom is a properties(?) Area.
- Under the properties area, there should be a slide bar. Typically the 2nd photo is active and is the one which is on top.
- By moving the slide bar the top photo should go from solid to semi tratransparent.
It's important to note that the overlay should be as accurate as possible. Either accurately line up the mint marks and see how the other devices line up or, lineup the devices and see if the mint marks line up almost perfect.
Hope it helps. I have most if not all notifications from this forum shut off. Its luck of the draw which ones I manually revisit.
Happy hunting.
