    1st overlay attempts

Thanks to Mint Error's instructions I'm making my 1st attempts at using the Paint.net overlay to decide if this coin matches a 1942-D Jefferson RPM 003. I'm using the 2 attached photos for the overlays & ask for your thoughts on evaluating the results. I can convince myself that the position of the mint mark to the building is good horizontally & vertically. I also think the part of the mint mark from the verticle bar of the "D" westward also looks reasonable. As I slide the software transparency bar, the bottom east end of my coins mint mark differs slightly from the target coin. My question- Is this possible normal variation in the the mint mark or die stage or proof that my coin does not match the target coin? Thanks for dragging me along through the educational process

    Afternoon Ron,
I have copies of both of these RPM's. The planchet above is localized MD I believe, Notice it's flat to the surface on the left - yellow arrow - then it slides or pushes to the right/or towards the rim? white arrows.

RPM003 is raised to the West - what you can see shows to the south so it's slightly rotated - top is right under secondary mintmark, the bottom is slightly rotated CCW.

    Hope this helps

Thanks. Performing the computer steps to make the overlay is the 1st step. I will continue to work on analyzing the results
