Thanks Eric,
I did a little search on ebay and found a 1987 d dime for sale that looks the same.
So post mint damage in exactly the same places?

In my opinion, whatever this is, its not a new variety. Its more than likely die deterioration. The other coin has damage at the foot of the 7. Worn dies will produce coins a bit differently. I dont have exact numbers on dimes, but cent working dies can produce up to 1 million coins. Quarters can do between 325,000 and up. Dime should be somewhere in between that. So, conservatively, lets say dime working dies make 500,000 to 1 million coins.
In order to confirm you have the exact coin as the one posted online, you need to produce an overlay of the two coins with the date and mint mark plus some others parts of the design to see if they match up exactly. You would need to find some pick up points or die markers that are exactly the same in location and direction.
If it does, that only means it came from the same working die. It does not mean its a variety. with close to 500,000 coins...some one is bound to have a coin from the same working die.
So after you do all that extra work , in the end, its a normal dime.
At best....It might be a partially clogged 7, and that has no additional value.
This appears to be a normal coin struck by worn down working dies.
