    1972-S Lincoln Cent RPM?

    Happy Holidays!

Based on what I've seen and read on Variety Vista and Wexler's websites, I believe this 1972-S penny might have a re-punched mintmark. I see doubling to the north with definite build up of material in the bottom curve of the "S". I don't see any signs of doubling anywhere else on the obverse which is why I believe it's an RPM. I'm hoping to get some additional opinions. Thanks in advance!

    Evening Nathan,
You did a very good job of dimming the light, better than I can do most of the time!
I just cannot tell if that's a buisness strike or a proof? Since it doesn't have a curve to the upper serif"" what I mean is look at the primaries upper serif, notice the rounded curve, now look at the darker possible RPM. it's not the same shape"" - hence I'm leaning more towards localized MD. B.U.T. if you turn the coin and show more of the north and serif - with the lighting - maybe that will prove something different. Nice clear photo's - good job!

      Hi Eric,
Thanks so much for your reply and input! To clarify, this is a business strike/circulation coin NOT a proof. I tried to grab a couple more photos that are a little closer and from different angles, though I'm not sure they that much different from the originals in terms of showing detail.

The picture with the blue arrows points out areas to the south of the "S" that I would consider normal based on the similar results with the "9" above. The picture with the purple arrows shows the areas that led me to wonder if this was perhaps a re-punched mintmark based on similarity I interpreted from the example of RPM-001 Variety Vista
