CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1943 P RPM 30 nickel

    I see that this date/ mintmark combination has over 70 RPM's to look for! I believe I have found RPM # 30 and am posting pictures of my coin (photo 1) and the VV example (photo 2). I put the 2 photos in Paint.net & like the comparison. The bottom of the coin and top right areas match nicely but my coin has some crud on top left comparison area. Is this enough visual evidence to add the coin to the collection?

    Take a toothpick and rub this area. If that is a top serif, then the RPM is a South. 1943-P-rpm30-my-coin_Coneca.jpg

      Thanks for the tip on using a tooth pick to knock crud off a mint mark. It worked great & did not damage the coin. I have tried using a Q-tip but it does not work well. Sadly I did not find what I was hoping for under the dirt but am happy to learn a new trick.
      Years ago I went after dirt on a coin with a dental pick. This of course had disasterous result for the coin!

        Since a toothpick is somewhat rounded and soft wood, it doesn't normally damage a coin unless your pressing really hard.
        1) so does the area where the purple arrow shows dissapear or is that poss serif still there? Then to reference position look at what I posted to your post on the 1943-P RPM#47. We need a close up yes, but we also need enouph of the Motto to verify mintmark position.

          Eric. I am submitting my homework for this submission. I took pictures of the VV wide view and a similar picture of my coin. I put them both into paint and resized them. I took the 2 pictures pasted below & compared them in paint.net. (I learned to use the rotate function this time around). I see a slight variation in the mint mark position as I move the slider. Is this due to the slight difference in the size & rotation of the coins or does this proove it is not a match to RPM 30? Thanks for helping me understand how to analyze the results!

            Ron,
            This is the tricky part. There are no marker's listed for this variety.
            I just cannot tell much from your photo on the right. That spot in the area makes it very tough to tell anything.
            I just do NOT see what is in the VV photo "Upper serif and under"" on this coin.
