    1921 Peace $1 VAM 3 discovery, grade?

    Hello all,

I've been lurking and trying to learn. Be gentle. . . I bought a raw 1921 Peace Dollar that the seller thought might be a VAM 3. Well, it has all of the markings listed on VAMWORLD. It is album toned, and the seller's 2 x 2 had MS 64 written on it. (yeah, right. . .) The photo on feeBay was not so great, so I took a chance.

Does anybody want to guess a grade? It has the standard bag marks and some scratches, and the hair and feathers are a little weak. But this can be from a worn die. There is sort of a white spot on the upper wing, like a water spot or something. Would an acetone dip help/hurt? Any advice is surely appreciated.

P.S. Also, if I decide to grade it, I belong to both NGC and PCGS. Any votes on who to go with? PEACE!

    Brad

As for being a VAM3 I dont know, I went through my slabbed Peace Morgans and found one with an almost identical wear on it and its slabbed at AU55. I dont know if they guy tried to mislead ya, some people assume that since a coin has "Mint Luster" that its in "Mint Condition".

I do not think that acetone would help and since you are thinking about encapsulating the coin, PCGS may detect that dipping and send it back as being "doctored".

As for grade, pictures are notorious for not tell the full story and I would not haphazard a guess.

Please don't do anything to your coin. You might want to leave the toning or help me figure out how to post a picture

The post above is 13 years old. Coneca prefers one post/coin per thread. I would start a new post.
            Thank You
