1947S Lincoln Penny possible DDO-002
I am looking at a very nice 1947S Lincoln Penny. I see extra thickness on 'LIBERTY' with light extra thickness on IGWT. Mint mark positioning looks good. The mint mark is MMS-004 (trumpet tail). There is a crescent shaped Die Gouge below the ear (stage C). Thoughts or comments?Tags: None

That die gouge under the ear would normally be a determining factor for this die. However, I have never seen this variety with the die scratches yours shows and the mint mark does not seem to match the location of the known variety. That could be the angle of the photo though. In addition, your does not seem to have the thickness seen on the actual variety. I would say this one needs to be examined in hand to verify if it is or isn't that variety.Bob Piazza

And one more thing about the thickness in 'LIBERTY'...first is that a relative relationship? I am pretty sure that it is so, if it is relative...Is that relative to other 1947S Lincoln Cents? Or other 1947 Lincoln Cents (PDS)? Or other 'S' Lincoln Cents? Or other Lincoln Cents in the same time frame, as in did multiple years share a master die.
FYI, I had 4 OBW rolls of 1947S Cents that I purchased 20 years ago on eBay. I never would have opened them but someone sounded an alarm on eBay that rolls being sold on there were fraudulent and specifically named that year. I opened them up and they were 1947S OBW rolls. I separated out the MS65 to MS67 and put the rest back in rolls (which I still have). I am looking through the cherry pickings now for varieties. No doubt more than you wanted to know.Last edited by rbroederer; 03-16-2021, 02:34 AM.
