1952D Washington Quarter with a solid mintmark

I am looking at a 1952D Washington Quarter. The coin is graded MS65 by NGC. The mint mark appears to be misshapen and solid with no hole to define the middle of the 'D'. The mint mark appears to be a MMS-005 (Small with Long Serifs). I have seen something like this on very worn coins but not a mint state coin before. Thoughts or comments?

It looks to be filled in with a die chip. Not real common, but not unheard of.
