CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1966-P Kennedy Half help attributing doubling on nose, lips and chin?

This is one that's been sitting unattributed in my collection for a long time. It's not the big one listed in the CPG, but it has similar doubling, mostly on the nose, lips, and chin, but all over the face, hair, ears, etc. as well. Variety vista lists a ton of different dies for this date that are super hard to distinguish, and Wexler seems to think the reason they're so hard to distinguish is that it's actually a doubled working hub. I have the coin tentatively listed on the flip as "possible DDO-014 or WWHO-001," but these could both be wrong. Anyone have thoughts on which it is and which variety this might be? Thanks!

Uploading to imgur since the forum is still giving me "unknown error" messages when I try to upload photos directly.

This is one of those coins that has baffled collectors for a long time. I do not know of anyone who has done the research necessary to prove conclusively if this is a working hub or not. As you have already found out, it is not easy to attribute this one to any of those dies already listed. Markers would ultimately be necessary to try and narrow it down, but coins like this drive attributers nuts too. Whoever ends up attributing half dollars would need to make the call on whether or not they even want to address this issue.

Thanks for the information, Bob! One thing I am curious about is how many dies are usually created from a single working hub - is this something that is known? I have heard that the typical life of a die is between 500k and 1M coins, but I have never heard any statistics on how many dies are created from a single hub.

Let me see if I can get Larry or Tim who are the Kennedy gurus to chime in. We probably need more photos to match markers.

Trying to figure out the cause for the Kennedy face doubling is on my list of things to do - I have no idea when I'll get to it.

Here is close up of DDO-016.

From the three pictures you posted, it is near impossible to determine which variety it is for nearly all of the one recognized have doubling on the profile.

Your half dollar looks like a BS, so you can rule out the SMS’s. When I compare your three photos to what is in my collection, I think you have the CONECA listed 50c 66 BS DDO-005, looks like and EDS. Can you compare your half dollar with the attached marker photos which are from the EDS DDO-005 in my collection? Is there a match?
Obverse Marker - thick die scratch south-west from upper first T in TRUST.
Reverse Marker – die scratch south-west from arrowheads to upper A of DOLLAR.
I think I can make out some of the following die scratches in your photos that are on the EDS DDO-005 I have.
            Die scratches north-south above nose.
            Die scratches under nose.
Die scratches in front and under chin.
