1954 FRANKLIN HALF POSSIBLE DDO-001
I am looking at a very nice 1954 Franklin Half Proof Coin. I am seeing similarities to the pictures on VV DDO-001. Specifically the 'LIBERTY', UST in 'TRUST' and the 9, 5 and 4 in the date including some scallop shaped marks on the bottom of the horizontal part of the 4. Picture number 6 is the example on VV with the marks pointed out. Thoughts or Comments?Tags: None

I would love to see some obverse motto closeups...especially TRUST, before I give an opinion. That seems to be where the strongest doubling occurs. The 4 of the date looks convincing, but I don't know if it was a working hub issue or not. I am thinking I see the same anomaly on the 1954D doubled die. I do not have any personal 1954 half dollars to check, but it is something we would need to keep in mind for later analysis.Bob Piazza

Hello Bob, Thanks for the update. Since I posted the coin, I have had a chance to go to www.franklinlover.yolasite.com and saw much better and more comprehensive pictures of DDO-001. Based on those pictures, I do not think the subject coin is DDO-001. I will post the pictures which were courtesy of Gil Medina as noted on the site. As far as the 4 goes. I was able to verify a very similar anomaly on several 1954 Proofs. I did not find that same anomaly on the 1954D or 1954S coins I checked.

That's good research. Well done. I did get a couple of people to check their 1954 half dollars for the anomaly on the 4 and I came up with a few who said they say something similar on a few coins. I think we can chalk that up to a master die issue.Bob Piazza
