CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

1968s combination RPM, die chips in both loops and a scrape that I don't understand

    The scrapes are the result of the ejection of the coin from the collar. It scraped against either the collar itself, or the retreating die resulting in the damage you are seeing. This is in the same category of MD. (machine doubling)

    penny68s-0010.jpg penny68sMM-0006.jpg I have found multiple copies of 1968s LMC with RPM, die chips in each loop and a scrape that removes the back 1/4 of the device but does not appear on the immediately adjacent devices. The scrape begins at the base of the device where it intersects and contacts the field. Is it post-strike damage?

    The second version has the same mint mark characteristics as above, but it alo has a similar scrape on the 8 in the date, again, adjacent devices are not affected. It also originates at the base of the device, contacting the field. What is that?

    Please note the line around the base of the 8 that the scrape makes visible. It appears to have depth and different color. What is that?
