  • 1970S WASHINGTON PROOF DDR?

I am looking at an exceptional 1970S Washington Proof Quarter. I see some spread on the outside lettering and notching on 'EPU' and the last 'A' in 'AMERICA'. It does not match up with any DDR on VV or DD. Thoughts or comments?

This is not hub doubling. Proof coins are struck more than once, and I think that is what you are seeing. The notch on AMERICA is the closest thing I see to an actual doubled die, but it is way too minor, and could be associated with the multiple strikes. It is always suspect when only one letter/number has a notch, but there are none on devices immediately around it.

Hello Bob, Thanks for the input. If you look at pic 1 you can see that 'EPU' has significant notching on all the letters I circled. I am also attaching the rest of 'AMERICA'. I am also attaching a close up of 'EPU'. Thanks in advance for a second look.

I am not inclined to call any of what you pointed out on the motto as having notches, In addition, you have noted that the 'notching' is on different portions of different letters when it should be on all letters. This does not appear to be a doubled die to me Ron. Sorry. We will wait for other opinions as I may be missing something.

What I am seeing is what I call reflective strike doubling, which I found occurs when viewing or photographing proof or newly minted coins.
