  • 1972-D WDDO-001 - Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling

    Hello!

I am new here and I joined to pick some brains for a coin that I found in my late fathers collection that very much resembles what I believe is a 1972-D WDDO-001 variety.

There is a posting I found on the site for "Brian's Variety Coins" (they directed me here), that very much resembles the coin I have. This is for a double die obverse variety.
    For reference: https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/listings/view/1417

The description that is given is as follows:

    Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling
Close Class VIII doubling shows on the numeral 2 of the date

    Markers:
Obv: Slanted die scratch to left of front of Jefferson's collar, die scratch in hair to upper right of forehead
    Rev: None noted

I can barely make out the die scratch by the collar, but with a loop I am able to see it at 10x. The camera doesn't do that one justice.
I can't make out the scratch by the forehead, I believe wear has worn that away.
I can very clearly make out the doubling on the 2 of the year, shown in the photos.

    ---

I am really curious if anyone knows the rarity of this coin or any other details surrounding it. Also I'm curious if what I'm seeing is factual, as my eye for this is not great.

    Any help is appreciated!

I can certainly see what you are seeing and would preliminarily agree with your attribution. It is not uncommon to not see any or all markers as wear and continued striking of the coin can obscure or add new markers.

      Thanks for that affirmation Bob.

I'm hoping someone has seen one on the market. My research has yet to find one anywhere, except for the attribution done on the variety site mentioned. I had reached out to them and they state the one photographed is the only one they've come across.

I'm tempted to send it in for more detail analysis.
