The machine damage would be form the machine that strikes the coins. Sometimes, the dies bounce a bit which causes the secondary images. The die deterioration is from the punishment and eventual break down of the dies as they continue to strike coins. The longer they strike, the more weaker and mushier the devices get. The P mint mark is a great indication of this.Bob Piazza

CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly.
