CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Machine double?

    This 1938 D buffalo nickel has an unusual "U" On the 1st "U" in Unum. VV has a slight spread DDR listed for this date but my coin is different. Does the group think this is machine doubling? In defense of the coin the width of the legs of the "U" are consistent on both sides & shelf doubling typically eats away at some of the device width. Your thoughts appreciated.

    This looks like die deterioration. Notice that the 'doubling' on the P of PLURIBUS is in a different direction that the U of UNUM. In addition, there is also regular circulation wear on the coin.
