CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1883 Liberty RPD

Found this at the same time I found the 1857 FE DDO.

I am thinking it matches up to the VP-003 (RPD-001).

    Thought I would share.

It looks like a good attribution. Well done!

Nice find. Gotta love the shield nickel series for varieties. Does anyone know what happened to Ed Fletcher? He was working one another book and was requesting coins. I sent him at least a dozen, several were ones he has never seen and sent me samples of pages that they were going to be the plate coin. This was back in 2008 or 2009. I was going to send some more wasn't getting any responses back from him. Then I got married, and got away from the hobby for a while.

The only info I could find on his name to include middle initial was a gent who is deceased from New Jersey, passed away in 2017. I am not sure where the author resided.

Although the coins listed above are V/ Liberty Nickels, I do not own any but my son does, I think one of them is an 1883 Proof. I dabble some in the Shield Nickels and would like a falling apart version of Fletcher's book to scan in and place on the tablet I carry to the shows. His book is way too expensive to buy now just to tear apart and scan it in, then toss it.

I don't believe that was him. He was actually a radiologic technologist for a hospital around Orlando. I was not thinking this morning I don't know why I was thinking shield nickel. I did the post quickly before I went in to work. I guess I am just an old fart about to fall off my rocker! LOL

Good to know where he was last seen. I have not heard anything about his where abouts for many years. If I have the time, I will look into it further. It would be nice to know if he had a garage filled with the shield nickel books.

Depending on your collection, there are a LOT of repunched dates in the Indian head cent series. There are a few in the three cent nickels ( not silver) and Shield nickels have a few dramatic ones as well. Foreign coins often are a good choice for low priced and very dramatic repunched dates and overdates.

It depends on your coin type, and whether you want forum members to give their opinion or, a CONECA staff member.

I will get back to the office today and find the post that lists all options. It may take me a little bit to find it.

The CONECA Forum does have a moderator, but the less posts he has to move the better.

There are a few main forums, just in case you don't understand where things go, I can offer a summary.

Always start your own post. Forum rules say one coin per post.

The die variety forum should have topics related to
Doubled dies (Doubled die obverse, Doubled die reverse)
                        Repunched mintmarks (D over D, S over S)
Over mint marks (D over S, S over D etc.)
Repunched dates (same date punched at least twice into a die)
Over dates (at least two different dates punched into a die)

A few websites that cater to many varieties are
                        Https://conecaonline.info
                        Http://varietyvista.com

The mint error forum has just about everything else
                        Off centers
                        Brockage
                        Clipped planchet
                        Double, Triple or multiple struck
                        Die cap
                        Die chips or cracks
                        Incomplete punch
                        Lamination error
                        Transition error
                        Struck through grease or debris
                        Struck on wrong planchet
                        And many more.

Additional errors can be found at
Https://error-ref.com under the completed entries area.

Plenty of other variety and/or error websites are out there. Depends on your interests.

General forum is a catch all.

CONECA Services has private areas that you can post a question to a CONECA staff member. CONECA uses this area to pre-screen anything that might be consider a send in. The CONECA staff looks at the coin on line and, if they determine they want to see it in hand, they will let the coin owner know. I do not know if the pre-screen costs anything. If it does, its a pretty low fee. More details can be seen on the main CONECA website, https://conecaonline.org
website. This area is broken down into two categories:

Examinations is for error type coins.

Attributions is for variety type coins.

                        That's about it.
                        Happy hunting.

Jamez Hopefully CONECA staff can use this info as a sticky to cut down on posting confusion for those brand new to the forum / hobby. CONECA staff can take it and copy/move/modify as they wish

You can add up to 8 photos per post. If you need more, reply to your post and add more. Photos need to be under 2mb each. Best size is about 800x800 pixels, in Jpg format.

It's best to crop (remove) excess background to allow the coin to be as big as possible. If you have any questions about posting photographs or posting, the General Forum is the best place to do this. Look for a blue button to add a post. It's best to have a title of the post that relates to the subject, eg How do I add photos or, 1964 Kennendy Half RPM , or other helpful info about the question you have.
