1945 10c Mercury S/Horiz ???

Good morning,
This 1945 S Mercury I have had for over ten years and have been reading of any new finds. It doesn't match the examples listed on Vista and placement is just way off. But, the die deterioration is so bad that I needed to ask if that could cause what mm shows? Or if die chips may have given it the appearance of 1945 10c S/Horizontal FS-503? I took pics from all 4 compass points in order to illuminate mm better. Thanks for any information

Based on your photos, I would say that deterioration could vey well cause what you are seeing. You put that and regular circulation wear together, and that would certainly cause that area to look suspect.

Thank you for the quick response mustbebobIs there anyway I can have it certified or verified by a company that specializes in that field? Or would I have to send it to a grading company and take my chances?

Bob may push CONECA to get it attributed when the service for dimes is available. I agree and it is the cheapest way out.
You'd know then before you send it in to have it attributed and slabbed by a TPG service, if need be.

The way I look at it like this, if they haven't found a horiz variety in about 100 years on this coin, with some probably in BU or Gem condition, then, I wouldn't wager much that this is one of them. They would have struck more than one dime with that die, that's for sure. =\


I downloaded the upside down photo and cropped it. This is what I see.
That is about as big I dare make it before it becomes too grainy.
There MIGHT be something under there, but it could very well just be dirt.

I suggest holding the coin under warm water and seeing if some of that debris will go away and offer a better look.

I agree with Gary also. If we can't get a good answer from the photos and 'cleaning', I would suggest sending it in to CONECA first. That fee would be substantially less than any third party grading service. Please be on the lookout for the dime attributions to open up, then contact the assigned attributer to have them schedule a look at your coin.

Thank you mustbebob Being that I am unfamiliar what to ask for, your comment on dime attributes from CONECA cleared my mind of what to do. I haven't had a chance to run coin under warm water yet and I apologize but will try it today and if it clears up area will post pics.

I think our original suggestion of sending it in to CONECA for a look is still pretty valid here. It seems an in hand look by an attributer is warranted.
