CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1971-S extreme MD or DD?

I have heard both opinions on this. Some say MD but others say DD. There is no other areas I can tell besides the date and mint mark. The mint mark is what seems to be throwing people. It’s strong enough to see with no magnifier. Would appreciate your insights.

    Machine Doubling.

No doubt about it... Definitely machine doubling. 99 times out of 100, if the mintmark shows the same doubling as the surrounding elements, it is not a doubled die or an RPM.

It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!

I agree with both comments above. Not one bit of doubt.

Anyone telling you otherwise isn't someone I'd listen to for any variety confirmation since they don't have a handle on what is a true doubled die.

Keep looking and best of luck with your finds.
