CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1990-D Kennedy Half Dollar (New Discovery?)

Hi there Bob! As the wind is whipping outside from Ian I’m on my scope and look what I found! This thing is RIDDLED in split serifs and nice moderate separation can be seen on the date, motto, and some of Liberty. I have more pics than what you see but the site limits us to only 8. I’ve looked and this is listed nowhere. What do you think? Am I seeing things? Thanks!

From what I can see Don, it does appear as though you have found a doubled die.

Thanks Bob. I think I may claim it. I can’t send it to Wexler because I’ve got him maxed out in new discovery coins right now and Jason exists only in theory, so Dr. Wiles is really my only option unless I’m missing someone here. Btw, I do think he’s attributing for VV because I see very recent accredations he’s given to people and their discoveries on the VV page. I think I’ll write him and see what’s going on.

Don...don't think of the following statements as coming down on you. I am putting them here so I can cut and paste from the text so that I am not continually saying the same thing to person after person after person.

Btw, I do think he’s attributing for VV
I don't know how many times I have to say it...he (Dr. Wiles) is not an attributer for Variety Vista. Take a look at the list of attributers that is published in Errorscope or the CONECA home page:

          https://conecaonline.org/attribution-services/

He may be offering some data or suggestions to the club, and based on his expertise and prior experience, we would definitely accept that, but he is not an attributor.

Jason does not exist only in theory. You MUST understand that this job is voluntary. He is a teacher, and also very busy. He has another life above and beyond CONECA, and as far as I am concerned, that should be his priority. I have always asked people to be patient, so I must ask that you continue to do so. I can not give a get well date, because I do not know when that would be.

We have also been busy re-writing the entire master list. It has taken a couple of years, but we are now listing some of it. here is the listing for that.

I have to be honest and say that I am getting tired of saying the same thing over and over again. I don't need some of the stress or arguments people are putting on me for the actions or inactions of the CONECA board. I too am a volunteer and had offered my expertise to moderate this forum. Had I known then what I would be put through over the past couple of years, I would have declined. It may be time for me to move on here real soon. I think what keeps me here are people like you, who are a pleasure to deal with. Very polite, and willing to learn. Thanks for being like that Don.

Thank you Bob. I certainly meant no harm or offense. I didn’t know the job was voluntary. I learned something today. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I certainly want to make sure I express my gratitude to everyone at CONECA for what they do. If you read my comments in some of the Facebook groups I sing the praises of this organization and have sent several here that are now members. The assistance and learning opportunities I don’t take for granted here and I consider this place an invaluable resource. Thanks again to you Bob and everyone at CONECA..

I know Don. I think frustration with the inability to be able to help you out from here has got to me. It is difficult for me to get answers sometimes too, and while I am in this position, I like to be able to help everyone...all the time. I am NOT a member of the COECA Board of Directors. I am a member of the club, but my job as the moderator here is voluntary as well.
I got a private message from James Wiles, and he straightened me out on what is going on with Variety Vista, and his numbering system. I learned some stuff that was not relayed to me when I took this position, so I learned something too. I do apologize to you and everyone else who has had to endure the delays. Whether they are all volunteers or not, there should be some information flow to the membership. This will all very much factors into my decision to stay or not.
Thanks again for being a great member of the forum, and for being as patient as you have been.

My opinion would be this obverse would be too minor to be listed in the Kennedy Master Listings. What do others think about this?

I do want to note that I have found several doubled dies for the obverse of this coin it’s just that I’ve only sent one in here. I have seen a variety of the 1990-D that displays very significant separation. I desperately want to find that one again. I think if you started cataloguing them you’d have a list of about a half a dozen or more real quick based on what I’ve seen. Lots of splits and notching on this date and at least one variety with some significant separation. When I find that one again I’ll send it in . Thanks !
