  • 1982-D 1C is this doubling?

Hello everyone, it’s been a while for me, but I have something I could use an opinion, from more skilled eyes on. I came across this 1982-D large date Zinc (2.5g) penny that has what looks like it has come doubling on it and has some zinc rot going on. but it also has some very interesting things going on as well. So, I just wanted to get some expert opinions on this one. It’s a difficult penny to get some quality photos on, but if you would like me to try and get a better photo and specific elements. Please just let me know and I will do my best.

Of course it is easier to see when in hand, but The main points of interest include...

    OBVERSE:

    Date:
    Word: LIBERTY:
Moto: Primarily on the word TRUST but seems to show on other elements.

    REVERSE:
    Words: PLURIBUS UNUM
Elements: TED in united, TES in states, OF AMER, ICA in America.
    Words ONE CENT

    Thank you.

Nice crisp photos, by the way !

The coin looks like it has step or shelf like areas. This typically is Mechanical doubling or in other words, worthless damage.

Articles in my signature may help.

If you are referring to the areas on the letters/numbers that look like they have separation, they are actually sunk into the devices because of the very same zinc rot you mention. Once the zinc turns to dust, or the plating lifts, the copper plating will give this appearance as it tries to fill the void where the zinc was.
