CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1967 Business Strike Kennedy Half Dollar (Quintupled Die Reverse)

    Here is a coin that was sent into James Wiles back on September 21, 2017. The coin was in a PCGS holder graded MS66 and attributed as the FS-801. The coin was obvious not the DDR-001 which is cross referenced to the FS-801. Some of the stars have a light quintupled split on their points.

    Mr. Wiles noted that, “DDR is too minor to list. (Not FS-801) It does not match anything currently listed. I saw an example of this from Larry earlier in the year. Here is what I told him, “These are borderline listable and in a couple of years, when I get to the Kennedy Half E – Book, I will want to see them again for research and maybe replacing a couple that really are too minor, or to fill in any spaces left by a doubled working hub. My focus is on those series that have had little or no publication up to this Point.”

          Just showing, from my experience, what is non – listable. I didn’t and still don’t aways agree with James Wiles on this issue, but it is what it is and after nearly three decades I’m still trying to figure out where the line is drawn on what it takes to have a variety listed.

          I pointed out at the beginning of this thread, that even one of the major third-party grading services on occasion will get the attribution wrong so the collector should verify the variety themselves.

          I also pointed out that when this coin was sent into James Wiles, he was speculating that there might be a doubled working hub used for this year of issue and he wanted to study further to determine if it was factual.

          I made this thread public instead of just an email to Larry so other members could express their thoughts and give constructive feedback. If any of the current attributers would like to give their opinions, even if Kennedy half dollars are not the series they specialize in, there comments would be welcome also.

            OK...Thanks for letting me know. Thanks for spelling out some very important factors including a TPG getting an attribution wrong once in a while, and always verifying things. BTW They are gorgeous photos!

            I agree with you 100% on the TMTL designation. As a Lincoln cent attributor, I have been chastised for making that designation on coins I attributed for coppercoins.com. It is a fine line and we always upset someone. Each attributor has their own standard, and you would notice that each club (VV, coppercoins, Wexler files, etc.) lists some varieties that others won't. That doesn't mean that a few years down the road, it can't be re-examined, and maybe even attributed.

            In the case of this coin, I don't know anything about possible Master doubling possibilities for this year. I do know that based on what I see, If I were the attributor for this denomination, I would have listed this. Thanks again Tim!

              A small point but I will make it. I used to send in bunches of Lincoln Cent DDOs to get attributed. Same year and mintmark, probably same die. One time, I think I sent in 20 total. Half of them were slabbed as "minor DDO" the others.... DDO with no reference to any type or new find.

              Eh, I can understand the trials and tribulations people have to go through to become a seasoned attributor for hire. I like drama coins - just not generic drama in life, so I never went down that wild road - I do however attribute my own and assist here.

              You have some Kennedy's that, if it were me, and there are newer attributors for CONECA, I'd consider sending them in. It's a crapshoot, BUT....there aren't many new DDO's coming out and what a better way to get the coin community buzzing again, by submitting a handful of listable Kennedy's.

                I will repeat the point I made. Different attributers, different clubs, different standards. You may choose to resubmit (or at least request another look) at a later date if you feel strong enough about it.

                  I should have elaborated more. This was through a third party grading service. I am not positive all of them were sent to the same attributor. The TPG POC was not able to provide me enough info to make a logical decision on what Tim is experiencing as well, I just did not know what was going to get the TMTL tag. No big deal, I have a plan for those.
