CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1988 Quarter RPM

Hi: James Wiles suggested I check here to see if what I found would be a candidate for an in hand attribution for him. I have what I believe is a 1988 Washington quarter with an RPM. Please take a look at it and tell me what you think. Thanks: Lou 1.jpg 2.jpg 4.jpg

i can see why you asked about that. it kinda has that look. i would be leaning towards no for RPM or doubling since the same effect on the mm is also on the 8 and may be on other parts of the devices which is indicative of machine doubling.

never hurts to set stuff like this aside on the off chance you submit a group of coins one day or see someone at a coin show/shop that has discoveries and thus knows what they are doing.

assessing stuff like this from even professional images can be a bit challenging online. you're images are pretty good though.

glad to see that they are doing screening via this forum and they are still doing in-hand examinations when warranted.

    happy hunting

I've seen alot of Machine Doubling that look like this in the 80's nickels, dimes, quarters. I think your going to find this is MD. Put the coin away as OCC said and look for more. My guess you will find other coins that also look like this.
