  • 1998 WIDE AM 3 ERRORS

    Hi everyone,
I found this coin last night going thru a box of cent rolls and thought it interesting. I just finished reading Herbert’s 7th edition of OFFICIAL PRICE GUIDE TO MINT ERRORS and I believe this to have the following 3 errors:
    1. Reverse struck with proof reverse die (I’m not sure which category Herbert calls this?).
    2. Offset Die Misalignment K-4 (MAD?) III-N-1 (Herbert)
    3. Rotated Die Strike cw-15 degree III-N-3(Herbert).
(This is my first reading of Herbert’s 7th edition so I will now try to use what I have learned from it for about a year before I read it again. I’m a slow learner at my age, so I must read some things more then once.)
Question- what makes Herbert’s book the Official Guide? (Other than it’s a very good book.)
Please look at the coin and let me know if you agree with my assessment. Anything you can add will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Bill

Your 1998 cent does show a minor horizontal misalignment of the obverse (hammer die). I'll take your word on the 20 degree rotated die error. These are pretty common. A rotated die error is considered significant only when it exceeds 30 degrees. The reverse does seem to show a "wide AM".

I've been trying to find more information about wide AM errors, but can't seem to find too much. What years of LMC were they present? Any rarity/value?

        Nice find for pocket change!

I think you'll find a good discription on the following website.

        http://www.lincolncentresource.com/wideams.html

As to values, I see all kinds of coins in different conditions on ebay.
        Hope this helps,

So far I've found 2 1998 wide AM's and 1 2000 wide AM in xf to au conditions. I 've look thru about 70.00 dollars worth of pennys, so it does not not pay well by the hour, but I'm sure having fun.
Hope you get lucky and find the 1999 wide AM that's the big one.

One can hope I guess. When I was younger I used to get a $50 sac of pennies every day from the bank and go through them every night. That was hardcore, I wasn't into error coin collecting at that time but I found lots of wheats and Indian head pennies. My bank tolerated me for a long time...
