in my opinion, its much lower and shelf like.
Numbers look a bit thinner so I would say its some sort of worthless doubling.
For doubled dies before1996, need to see thicker devices and possibly notch/split serifs.Gary Kozera

Gary is spot on with this one. I look at so many 1939 rev of 1940's Nickels at the coin shows that have this late die state mushy lettering. This one also has MD. Machine Damage Doubling that makes it even worse. Sorry this is very common - it's not worth anything more than the coins value to you. Something your grandmother saved.

That's fine. I thank you for the help. I was just trying to relate it to pictures in the red book. It was where it says it should be. i have never had a real DD. But I did have a Lincoln Cent I posted that had a split serif and I was told that wasn't a DD either. So I am trying to wrap my head around it. One day when I see a true one I hope it all clicks.

I suggestvgoing over to https://doubleddie.com and look over the worthless doubling section John Wexler created. It shows comparisons of doubled dies versus machine doubling.Gary Kozera
